San Diego Did WHAT?!?!
Get out your magic fairy wands, ladies and gentlemen, because this is a Cinderella story if I've ever heard one.
Let's look at the odds, shall we? San Diego is a 13 seed team with four unsuccessful tournament victory attempts under its belt. UConn is a 4 seeder that was favored to be an Elite Eight pick (up until tonight, that is), and has never lost the first round of the NCAA's since 1979 and especially not under Jim Calhoun's lead.
Odds seemed to be against San Diego from the outset, from the cringe-inducing moment of silence from the dance team to their rather desperate chants of “Go, San Diego, go!” when the wrong track started. I started wishing they would go . . . away.
And, of course, everyone had already noticed the height difference between Hasheem Thabeet and and Rob Jones. Jones barely bothered to leave the floor for the toss up. But, really, why would he? He would run a greater risk of an accidental smack-down by Thabeet's tentacles of death, also sometimes referred to as his arms.
But by the end of overtime, nothing could stop them. Two of San Diego's star players fouled in overtime, but they kept playing fierce and De'Jon Jackson made school history by sinking a long jumper with barely a second left in OT, wining the game for the Toreros after intercepting an inbound pass.
The shock was still evident on first year coach Bill Grier's face as he did his best “deer in the headlights” impersonation for the cameras and gave his “we did it!” speech with all the flair of an old filing cabinet. His star players chimed in later on to credit sticking to the gameplan for the victory (though the long jumper helped, I'm sure.) Grier responded by continuing to look like a deer caught in the headlights. “You just gotta believe,” added Brandon Johnson. “And you gotta go out there with the same confidence you do every game and just go out and make shots.”
Maybe the game would have been different if the Huskies had had their star player A.J. Price, but perhaps it wouldn't have many any difference at all. Sometimes dreams are just made of young men with heart, determination, and bad knees.
