Michael Beasley
Michael Beasley, a current college freshman, plays basketball for Kansas State University. Considered to potentially be the best college basketball player of all time, Beasley, who plays forward position, has a current record of 866 points and 408 rebounds, averaging 26.2 points per game, breaking the previous point record held by Mitch Richmond with 768.
Beasley was born January 9th, 1989 in Frederick, Maryland to Fatima Smith and Mike Jones. In 2007, he was ranked one of the top basketball players in the country and continued up from there. In his younger years, Beasley played for one of the highest ranked AAU youth teams, the PG Jaguars. In 2006, he was named a USA Men's U18 National team member with an average of 18 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, making him 3rd in the USA Men's U18 all-time record book.
He switched High Schools a total of 6 times before entering college, but it wasn't the grades or different schools that made Beasley special, it was his playing ability. And as he left High School with a 138-5 record, no one could deny that he had talent. For his 2004-2005 playing year, he averaged an amazing 28 points and 13 rebounds per game, leading the Washington Post to name him to the All-Met first team.
The next year his 20.1 ppg., 10.4 rpg. average as well as his 21 double-doubles earned him quite a bit of notoriety as he was named to EA Sports' All-America first team as one of only four juniors, Parade Magazine's All-America second team, USA Today's All-America third team, and one of just three non-seniors on Slam Magazine's All-America teams . . . three times.
College didn't slow Beasley down as he became 3rd in the nation for point averages (26.5) and first for rebounds (12.5). His double-double average also rose to 26, breaking the previous freshman average held by Carmelo Anthony and making him the 27th player in NCAA Division 1 History to do so in one season. He continued to break 27 Kansas State records and on February 23rd, he set a Big 12 record by scoring 44 points in the game against Baylor. But he wasn't done with Big 12, as he earned 13 single-game and single-season marks, as well as awards for Player and Freshman of the year. More teams called him on their side as 06-07 saw him named to the McDonald's All-American team (as well as game MVP), the East team for the 2007 Jordan Classic, and the American team for the 2007 Nike Hoops Summit.
In the 2008 NCAA Championships, he led the Wildcats with 23 points and all rebounds to a much-hyped victory against the USC Trojans. But Kansas State couldn't hold on forever and lost to Wisconsin by 17 points, with Beasley contributing another 23 points and 13 rebounds.
There have been rumors that Beasley will join the NBA after the end of the 2008 season, but he has stated that he doesn't feel ready and will most likely remain at Kansas State for at least one more year.
