ABA
The ABA was a professional basketball league in the U.S. that existed from 1967 to 1976. It competed with the more established NBA for players, fans and media coverage until the two joined in June 1976. Four franchises from the ABA were allowed into the NBA - the New Jersey Nets, San Antonio Spurs, Indiana Pacers and Denver Nuggets.
The ABA had a pioneering function, being the first to introduce the three-point shot and using a blue-red-and-white basketball. Several Hall of Fame players that went on to have great careers in the NBA started off as ABA stars - including "Dr. J" Julius Erving, Moses Malone and "The Iceman" George Gervin.
However, many franchises were struggling to break even or to attract sufficient interest from fans and television so that a merger with the NBA became inevitable.
